Story

Hello!

I'm running the London Marathon on Sunday the 28th April, 2019 in memory of a dear friend, Adam Jacques, who passed away due to complications with cystic fibrosis in February 2018.

Adam was one of the most jubilant and effusive people I've ever known; he didn't let cystic fibrosis curtail his ambitions and managed to travel the world, get married and balance a successful career as a journalist. People gravitated towards him because of his warmth, intelligence and sense of humour.

Since Adam left us, a large group of his friends have rallied together to be Active for Adam. Together, we have fundraised over £27,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust by cycling, running, swimming and walking. Some participants have opted to dress as superheroes while undertaking these athletic feats...We think that Adam would have loved that, being someone who enjoyed fancy dress himself.

I met Adam more than a decade ago through a friend, Melanie, (who was then his flatmate). I lived down the road from them in West Hampstead, London, and often came over to watch movies, have drinks on New Year's Eve or watch the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Adam was always there, always ready for a conversation, no matter how banal.

I am aiming to raise everything I can for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and I'm grateful for every donation. I started training the first week of January (feel free to follow my socials to see how I'm getting on!) and it's going to be a hard slog as I prepare myself for my first ever marathon.

To hear from Adam himself about living with cystic fibrosis, he wrote a feature for The Guardian here:

Thank you!

I'VE DONE IT! I crossed the finish line AND hit my fundraising target. I can't thank each and every one of you ENOUGH. I'm floored by your support and generosity. Your donations are going to a great cause (and between this and the other sports challenges that Adam's friends have undertaken in the last year, we have raised £30,000 for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust!). So many of you have donated, so please forgive me if I haven't thanked you in person. But I've been watching the notifications come in and it carried me through training!

The carb loading begins tomorrow in preparation for Sunday's big race! Once again, I just wanted to thank everyone for their donations and support to date. I'm so humbled that I've been able to raise over £1,300 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. If you want to follow my progress on Sunday, my bib number is 9353 (you can track runners via their app)! I'm aiming for a 4 hour finish and hope that some of you can join me for a beer (my first since March 16th...) at BrewDog Tower Hill from 3pm. I'll be sweaty and starving!

One month tomorrow, I'll be undertaking the challenge of running 42 consecutive kilometres. MADNESS, RIGHT? I just wanted to sincerely thank everyone who has donated so far towards the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. I know my fundraising goal is ambitious, but every £ counts, especially when it's going towards a fantastic charity doing really meaningful work. For those of you who will be watching the race on the day, watch out for this shirt! x
